Carlyle Group acquires majority stake in Tiger Management-backed Emerging Sovereign Group

Private equity firm Carlyle Group has purchased a 55% stake in Emerging Sovereign Group LLC, a hedge fund founded by Kevin Kenny focusing on emerging markets. According to Bloomberg, Emerging Sovereign Group is backed by Julian Robertson’s Tiger Management, which will retain its stake in the hedge fund.

ESG’s Emerging Sovereign Master Fund rose 6.9% YTD as of May, and returned 8.5%, 9.8% and -21% in 2010, 2009 and 2008 respectively. In comparison, Hedge Fund Research Inc.’s data shows emerging markets hedge funds returning 11%, 40% and -37% in 2010, 2009 and 2008 respectively. This year, emerging market hedge funds are up 0.8% YTD as of May.
