In this week’s buy-side hiring report, we look at recent additions made by three industry stalwarts Citadel Investment Group, Pacific Investment Management Company (PIMCO) and Pershing Square Capital Management, as well as emerging hedge fund manager Samena Advisors. All of these firms have recently made moves to add industry veterans to their investment teams.

First up is Ken Griffin’s Citadel Investment Group which has added Brian Murphy to its Citadel Securities division as a director and systematic credit trader. Mr. Murphy joins Citadel from Phoenix Partners, a leading credit and equity derivatives interdealer broker. Citadel also recently promoted Patrik Edsparr to president of Citadel Europe and head of global fixed income. Edsparr joined the firm n 2008 from JPMorgan where he had served as global head of proprietary trading and principal investments.

PIMCO, the largest global bond focused investment management firm, announced that it has hired Andrew Jessop from Goldman Sachs Asset Management. Jessup will be a portfolio manager, EVP and senior member of PIMCO’s high yield team. While at Goldman for over 12 years, Jessup was a managing director, portfolio manager and co-head of high yield. He will officially start with PIMCO on November 30, 2009 and will be based out of the firm’s Newport Beach headquarters.

Late last quarter, Bill Ackman’s activist hedge fund firm Pershing Square Capital Management added Robert Unger to its trading team. Prior to Pershing Square, Mr. Unger was Director in SunTrust’s structured equity group and before that was a portfolio manager at Black River Asset Management where he focused on convertible arbitrage, equity and derivatives opportunities.

Finally, London-based multi-strategy manager Samena Advisors has added Linda Cai to its Hong Kong investment team. Ms. Cai was previously on the investment team at Perry Capital and prior to that was an investment banking analyst at Goldman Sachs. Just last month, Samena announced that it had partnered with Argyle Street Management to launch the Samena ASM Asia Bond Fund.
