If “as goes January, so goes the year” holds true, the larger hedge funds may have much to celebrate in 2013. As reported by Value Walk, a slew of hedge funds, led by Dan Loeb’s Third Point Ultra fund (up 5.7 percent), have jumped out with healthy, mid-January gains. His flagship Third Point Offshore fund was up 4 percent.

Crispin Odey’s Odey European fund and Landsdowne Development Market Fund both posted 5 percent gains. Jeffrey Altman’s Owl Creek Overseas fund returned 3.1 percent followed by Boaz Weinstein’s Saba Capital with 2.24 percent, and York Investments Ltd with 1.2 percent.

Bill Ackman’s Pershing Square Capital Management and Lee S. Ainslie’s Maverick Capital Ltd are among the few large hedge funds that didn’t fare so well.
