In this week’s hedge fund hire report, we look at a number of hedge fund managers that have recently made additions to their investment teams, as well as Highland Capital Management, which announced the departure of a managing partner.

The first hedge fund manager is Morgan Stanley Investment Management’s FrontPoint Partners. Global technology sector specialist Gary Wolk has joined the firm from Bellman Walter Capital. Mr. Wolk will be a portfolio manager on FrontPoint’s technology strategy team.

Private equity firm Blackstone Group (NYSE: BX) announced last week that it had hired Byron Wien as Vice Chairman of its Blackstone Advisory Services division. Mr. Wien was previously the Chief Investment Strategist at Pequot Capital. Before Pequot, he was with Morgan Stanley for over 20 years where he served as Chief U.S. Investment Strategist. According to the firm’s press release, “he will act as a senior adviser both to the Firm and its clients in analyzing economic, social and political trends to determine the direction of financial markets and thus helping guide investment and strategic decisions.”

Lee S. Ainslie’s Maverick Capital added to its research team by hiring Senior Analyst Craig Addeo. Mr. Addeo was previously with Greenbriar Equity Group, a private equity investor focused exclusively across the full spectrum of the global transportation industry.

Finally, Highland Capital Management’s Jack Yang has left the hedge fund manager. Mr. Yang was a managing partner and had headed up the firm’s business development efforts for many years. Reports suggest that Mr. Yang has no immediate career plans. 2008 was not a kind year to Highland Capital. In October, the firm announced it was liquidating two funds, including its flagship Crusader Fund, amid losses and redemptions.
