Highbridge Capital Management recently announced its plans to purchase a majority stake in Brazilian alternative asset management company Gávea Investimentos. The Rio de Janeiro-based hedge fund manager, which oversees $6 billion assets under management, was founded in 2003 by Arminio Fraga, currently Chairman and Chief Investment Officer. Before founding the firm, Mr. Fraga was President of the Central Bank of Brazil. Since its inception Gávea has developed multiple investment products, including hedge funds and private equity, and uses a macroeconomic strategy to invest in emerging and international markets. “While our emerging market investmet strategies can enhance Highbridge’s global platform, we will benefit from their successful track record of building businesses like ours,” commented Mr. Fraga. After the purchase is finalized, Mr. Fraga will join Highbridge’s Board of Managers, Executive Commitee, and Investment Committee.
Gávea and Highbridge have assured investors that Gávea’s executive team and investment process will remain unchanged, and Gávea and Highbridge’s relationship is expected to be similar to the one established between Highbridge and J.P. Morgan Asset Management, which first purchased a stake Highbridge in 2004. “Gávea will provide Highbridge with greater macroeconomic insight and direct exposure to investing in Brazil, which will be powerful addition to our investment capabilities,” stated Highbridge CEO Glenn Dubin. Highbridge plans to use the partnership with Gávea to accelerate the hedge fund’s expansion in Brazil and South America.
Highbridge Capital Management LLC is a multi-strategy alternative investment management firm founded in 1992 by current CEO Glenn Dubin and former MD Henry Swieca in 1992.
