Largest Commodities Focused Hedge Funds top $43 Billion in Assets

The Top 50 Commodities Equity Focused Hedge Fund list has been released, revealing that the top funds now oversee $43.1 billion in equity assets. The Top Commodities Hedge Fund List is led by Kayne Anderson Capital Advisors, Energy Income Partners and JANA Partners.

Kayne Anderson Capital Advisors retains its top spot from last quarter with 99.24% of assets in commodity-related stocks. Kayne Anderson focuses on niche investing in upstream oil and gas companies, energy infrastructure, specialized real estate, middle market credit, growth private equity and distressed municipal opportunities.

Energy Income Partners (EIP) holds the second spot with 78% of its ~$4bn in assets invested in commodities. EIP is based out of Westport, CT and manages investments in energy infrastructure such as pipelines, storage and terminals. EIP was founded in 2003 by James Murchie, Eva Pao and Linda Longville.

JANA Partners, while not strictly a commodities focused hedge fund, is number three on this quarter’s list. An event-drive hedge fund, JANA has recently been betting big on commodity related stocks, which accounted for 48% of its equity portfolio at the end of the 2nd quarter. JANA is headquartered in New York City and has been active since 2001 when it was created by Co-Founders and Managing Directors Barry S. Rosenstein and Gary Claar.

Notably, the top 50 commodity investing hedge funds allocated $30 billion or 70% of their total US equity assets, to Energy and Basic Materials stocks. That’s a $3 billion increase since 3/31/2013.

Some other notable hedge funds at the top of the list include #4 Harvest Fund Advisors LLC and #11 Encompass Capital Advisors LLC. David Martinelli’s Harvest Fund Advisors had 98.7% of its portfolio invested in energy related stocks. Harvest Fund, which is headquartered in Wayne, PA specializes in MLPs and energy infrastructure investing.

Ranking Methodology: The Top Commodities Equity Hedge Fund rankings are compiled on a quarterly basis using hedge fund firms’ overall U.S. equity assets under management. The Commodities list includes the top hedge funds that have more than 45% of their U.S. equity assets invested in U.S. listed Energy and Basic Materials companies.
