Man Group invests in Stanley Ku’s Minerva Macro Fund

Despite last year’s turbulent market conditions, Man Group plc is still making significant investments in emerging hedge fund managers. According to a press release, Man Investment’s RMF Global Emerging Managers Fund has invested $50 million in seed capital in Asia-focused Minerva Capital Management Ltd’s
maiden fund, the Minerva Macro Fund. In July, the RMF Global Emerging Managers Fund invested the same amount in 5:15 Capital Management, which is run by three Brevan Howard veterans.
Hong Kong-based Minerva was founded earlier this year by portfolio manager Stanley Ku. Prior to Minerva, Mr. Ku founded the Hong Kong office of Fortress Investment Group where he oversaw $750 million in assets for Fortress’ Drawbridge Global Macro Fund. Minerva’s team also includes risk and business manager Dorothy Lau who was previously a portfolio manager at JPMorgan and Goldman Sachs.
Hans Hurschler, head of Hedge Fund Ventures at Man Group noted that Mr. Ku’s experience made him a “well respected money manager in Asia” and continued to say that Man plc was “also enthusiastic about investing in early in its development because Minerva invests in the kind of highly liquid assets that are especially appealing to investors following last year’s problems with gating and side pockets.”
Stanley Ku commented that the Man Group’s involvement adds a “stable asset base” to the fund and strong financial management experience. Man Investment typically makes 4 or 5 investments in emerging managers each year, usually in a specific fund and Man’s recent investments show that not all hedge fund managers were negatively affected by last year’s crisis, in fact, some have found new trading opportunities as a result.
