Most Global Macro Hedge Funds Suffer, Brevan Howard Thrives

Typically, wild market swings create opportunities for shrewd Global Macro hedge fund managers. A recent article from Reuters highlights how most of the more celebrated global macro hedge funds have struggled to post respectable returns throughout 2011.
Notable unimpressive performance numbers from the article, include:
- Louis Bacon's Moore Global Investments Fund, which is down 2.6% for the year through November 18th
- Fortress Investment Group’s flagship macro fund, which was down approximately 10% for the year through late November
- Bruce Kovner’s Caxton Associates Macro Fund, which has only returned 1% through November 30th
- Paul Tudor Jones' Tudor BVI Global Fund , which was up 3% through November 25th
The one bright spot from the article was London-based Brevan Howard Asset Management. Alan Howard’s hedge fund, which has more than $25 billion in assets under management, is reportedly up 12.7% for the year through late November. According to Reuters, Brevan Howard’s outperformance can largely be attributed to profits from its bearish bets against Europe. |
