The latest list of the Top 100 Hedge Funds from the greater New York City metropolitan area has been released, revealing that the top NYC hedge funds oversee a combined $436B in US equities. Impressively, the Top NYC Hedge Funds saw their equity assets increase by $70 Billion, or 19%, during the first quarter of 2012. Not surprisingly, eight of the top hedge funds on the list are also members of HedgeTracker’s overall top 10 hedge fund list.

Midtown Manhattan has held on to its position as the hedge fund world’s epic center, housing the majority of the top NYC hedge funds. Notably, just three midtown zip codes (10017, 10019, and 10022) are home to fifty-three of the top 100 hedge funds on the list.

Once again, the 50-story General Motors Building at 767 Fifth Avenue in midtown houses the most hedges funds on HedgeTracker’s list. Among the eight top hedge funds that call the iconic GM Building their home are Carl Icahn’s Icahn Associates and Lee S. Ainslie’s Maverick Capital, which are ranked #10 and #12 on this quarter’s list, respectively.

While midtown is home to Renaissance Technologies, the #1 ranked hedge fund on this quarter’s list, most of the other top ranked funds are scattered throughout the city and the Connecticut suburbs. #2 ranked D.E. Shaw & Co. has its headquarters in Times Square, while #3 ranked Two Sigma investments has its headquarters down in SOHO.

Somewhat surprisingly, only 14 hedge funds from the Connecticut suburbs made the top 100 NYC metro hedge fund list. The top two Connecticut hedge funds on the list were once again Clifford Asness’ AQR Capital Management LLC (#4 on the list) and Steve Mandel’s Lone Pine Capital (#6 on the list). Eight of the CT hedge funds were from Greenwich, while the others reign from Stamford, New Canaan, South Norwalk and Stamford.
