Nine Chapters Capital, Sheffield Asset Management and GRT Capital claim top spots on the Top Mid-Sized Hedge Fund List

The Top Mid-Sized Hedge Fund list has been released, revealing that the hedge funds on the list oversee a combined $69.7 billion in US equities. Nine Chapters Capital Management, Sheffield Asset Management and GRT Capital Partners LLC lead this quarter’s Top 100 Mid-Sized Equity Hedge Funds list.

Nine Chapters Capital Management, which reported assets of $847 million, is a quant focused hedge fund manager that was founded by CEO and lead portfolio manager Chao Ku in 2012. Prior to Nine Chapters, Ku was Head of Portfolio Management and Analytics at Two Sigma.

Twenty-nine hedge funds on the list saw their equity assets increase by more than $100 million over the 1st quarter. Leading the way were Ramius Capital Group (+$512m), Tourbillon Capital Partners (+432m) and Anchor Bolt Capital, LP (+$337m).

Notably, Emerging Hedge Fund Managers accounted for 21% of the hedge funds on the list.

Not surprisingly, the top investment strategy for the Top 100 Mid-Sized Equity Hedge Fund list is Long/Short Equity, which is employed by 30 hedge funds that manage more than $21.2 billion in assets. Five of these long/short hedge funds are global equity focused investors.

Interestingly, thirteen sector focused managers made the list with assets nearly topping $10 billion. The sector focused managers on the list have a range of industry focuses, including: Energy, Financials, Healthcare, Technology and Tech-Media-Telecom (TMT) .

A total of 1o Deep Value and Distressed focused hedge funds made the top 100 Mid-Sized Hedge Fund list, including industry stalwarts Blum Capital Partners and Sandell Asset Management.

Ranking Methodology: The top 100 Mid-Sized Hedge Fund rankings are compiled on a quarterly basis using hedge fund firms’ overall U.S. equity assets under management.
