In this week’s hedge fund hire report, we look at four marquee hedge fund managers that have recently added notable investment professionals to their teams. The first fund manager is Steven A. Cohen’s SAC Capital Advisors. The firm recently hired Douglas Blagdon as a managing director. Blagdon joins SAC Capital from Citigroup where he headed up the Citi Alternatives Distribution Group. In April, Citigroup announced it was winding down the group, which had been in charge of the troubled bank’s capital raising efforts for private equity funds, hedge funds, real estate funds, and infrastructure funds. Blagdon’s hiring suggests that SAC Capital may be in the process of raising more capital.
SAC Capital has also hired Ross Garon as a Managing Director of Quantitative Strategies. Garon was previously a partner at Tykhe Capital LLC, a financial services company with expertise in the application of quantitative techniques and computer technologies. Early on in his career, he helped establish D. E. Shaw Securities’ presence in London and Tokyo.
While Blagdon and Garon where starting at SAC, portfolio manager Marc Tishfield was packing up his things to go join “Izzy" Englander’s Millennium Partners. Englander’s hedge fund also managed to poach Keith Brunetti from another industry rival, Ramius LLC. Brunetti joined Ramius in 2003 and while at the firm he was a head trader for a billion dollar long/short equity strategy.
Millennium Partners has also added Amit Tyagi as a portfolio manager. Tyagi is overseeing a high frequency multi-strategy portfolio. He joined Millennium from JPMorgan where he was an Executive Director managing a similar strategy. Prior to JPM, Tyagi had stints with Bear Stearns and Deutsche Bank.
John Paulson’s merger arbitrage and event driven focused Paulson & Co. has expanded its credit team by hiring senior vice president Dan Kamensky and senior analyst Lei Wang. Mr. Kamensky joins Paulson & Co. from Barclays Capital, while Wei joins from Deutsche Bank. Paulson & Co.’s credit team lost a star manager earlier this year when Paolo Pellegrini left the firm to launch his own hedge fund venture, PSQR Management LLC.
Finally, hedge fund of fund manager Pacific Alternative Asset Management Company (PAAMCO) announced that Peter D.A. Stein has joined the firm as Chair of its Strategy Allocation Committee. He was previously the Chief Investment Officer at the University of Chicago where he was responsible for the management of the University's $4.9 billion endowment. Irvine, California-based PAAMCO manages approximately $9 billion for large, sophisticated institutional investors.
