|While many big hedge fund names have crashed and burned during the downturn, a number of established managers have expanded their investment teams by hiring talented industry veterans. In this week’s report, we look at recent hires made by three hedge fund firms that manage more $1 billion in US equity assets each.|
The first fund is New York-based Samlyn Capital, which was founded in 2007 by Robert Pohly and his team from Sigma Capital, a SAC Capital subsidiary. The long/short equity manager has recently hired experienced analysts Doug McLane and Hunter Davis. Prior to Samlyn, Mr. McLane worked as an analyst for more than five and half years at growth-oriented Sirios Capital Management. Mr. Davis joined the firm in June. He has experience in private equity and investment banking at Wachovia Capital and Goldman Sachs, respectively. As of 3/31/09, Samlyn managed more than $1.2 billion in equity assets.
Industry stalwart, Greenlight Capital has hired David Tepperman as an analyst. Mr. Tepperman was previously with New Jersey-based GSC Group. Greenlight was co-founded in 1996 by David Einhorn who garnered significant media coverage in 2008 by predicting the downfall of Lehman Brothers. The value-oriented shareholder activist firm currently oversees more than $2.4 billion in US Equities.
The final firm is Richard Chilton’s New York-based Chilton Investment Company. The hedge fund manager, which manages approximately $2.5 billion in US Equities, hired Mingli Kwang as an investment analyst. Kwang was previously a senior investment analyst at Maverick Capital, where he principally covered Asian equities. Chilton Investment Company is a long/short equity investor that primarily invests in securities of growth and special situation companies.
