TerraVerde Capital Partners LLC is in the process of launching a Green investment focused hedge fund of funds. TerraVerde Capital is based in New York and was founded by Richard Bookbinder, who is also the founding member of fund of funds manager Bookbinder Capital Management. Bookbinder Capital, which was founded in 1999, currently manages three traditional fund of hedge funds.
TerraVerde Capital’s first fund will only invest in hedge funds that employ green strategies, such as global carbon footprint reduction, "green" alternative energy, and clean energy. The firm believes that the changing political landscape in the United States presents a unique investment opportunity. The firm’s marketing materials emphasize the impact of a new legislative focus in Washington to reduce carbon footprints, the need for long term energy security, the need for an environmental strategy as well as the need for job creation in technology and infrastructure.
According to the TerraVerde’s website, the firm’s research process will seek to identify hedge fund “managers who invest in strategic environmental drivers at a policy, industry and company level. The main high-level drivers are energy security, resource depletion and the internalization of environmental costs. Each fund manager has a global environmental universe of selected companies reclassified to match environmental sectors. A fundamental, bottom up analysis identifies stocks with alpha potential, followed by a detailed analysis of an investment’s prospects for sustainable value creation, including an assessment of company management quality, corporate governance and environmental awareness.”
While the firm will not reveal what funds it is considering for investments, many of the featured hedge funds in HedgeTracker’s Free Directory will undoubtedly be considered. Some of these funds include:
Auriel Capital Management (Sustainability), Blue Marble Capital Partners Limited (Sustainability), Craigmillar LLC (Clean Technology), Crosslink Capital (Clean Technology), Generation Investment Management (Sustainability), Hazel Capital (Clean Technology), Perella Weinberg Partners Oasis Fund (Water and Clean Technology), and Resolve Capital (Sustainability).
