Top Mid-Sized Hedge Funds oversee $67 Billion, Emerging Managers Account for more than 20% of Top Funds

The list of the Top 100 Mid-Sized Equity Hedge Funds has been released, revealing that the top hedge funds oversee a combined $66.9 billion in US equities. The Top Mid-Sized Hedge Fund list is led by Elm Ridge Management LLC, Palo Alto Investors and Camden Asset Management LP.

Elm Ridge Management, which employs a value focused investment style, reported assets of $848 million. The firm was founded in 2000 by Dr. Ronald Eric Gutfleish. Prior to founding Elm Ridge, Gutfleish held senior investment management roles at Omega Advisors, HPB Associates, Sanford C. Bernstein & Co and Goldman Sachs Asset Management, where he headed GSAM’s active value team.

Notably, Emerging Hedge Fund Managers accounted for 23% of the hedge funds on the list. The top emerging manager on the list is Chris Hansen’s Valiant Capital Partners with $834 million assets. Valiant Capital gained great notoriety for its pre-IPO investment in Facebook.

Nineteen hedge funds on the list saw their equity assets increase by more than $100 million over the 2nd quarter. Leading the way were White Elm Capital LLC (+$248m) and Jet Capital Investors (+$238m).

Not surprisingly, the top investment strategy for the Top 100 Mid-Sized Equity Hedge Fund list is Long/Short Equity, which is employed by 29 hedge funds that manage more than $19 billion in assets. Eight of these long/short hedge funds are global equity focused investors. Interestingly, seventeen specialty managers made the list with assets topping $11 billion. The specialty managers on the list have a range of investment focuses, including: Convertibles, Commodities, Energy, Financials, Healthcare, Technology and Tech-Media-Telecom (TMT).

A total of 14 Deep Value and Distressed focused hedge funds made the top 100 Mid-Sized Hedge Fund list, including industry stalwarts Blum Capital Partners and Sandell Asset Management.

Ranking Methodology: The top 100 Mid-Sized Hedge Fund rankings are compiled on a quarterly basis using hedge fund firms’ overall U.S. equity assets under management.
