Top Small-Cap Hedge Funds oversee $31.5 billion; TFS Capital & Deerfield Management claim top spots

The Top 50 Small-Cap focused hedge funds now manage nearly $22.3 billion in small-cap assets, just slightly lower than the $22.5 billion that they oversaw at the end of the last quarter. Overall, the top 50 Small-Cap hedge funds oversee $30.7 billion, allocating 70.7% of their assets to companies with market capitalizations that are less than $2 billion.

The Top Small-Cap Hedge fund list is once again led by TFS Capital LLC, which took over the top spot last quarter, after having held onto the #2 spot at the beginning of the year. West Chester, PA-based TFS Capital LLC, also known as Technical Financial Services, is led by its co-founders Larry Eiben, Kevin Gates and Richard Gates. Since its inception, TFS’s investment process has relied on its quantitative models that are designed to exploit market inefficiencies.

Following TFS Capital on the list are #2 Deerfield Management Co, #3, Starboard Value LP and #4 RiverNorth Capital Management. Both Deerfield and Starboard are based in New York City, while RiverNorth Capital Management is based in Chicago.

Healthcare industry focused Deerfield Management is led by James E. Flynn, while activist investor Starboard Value LP is led by Jeffrey Smith, Mark Mitchell, and Peter Feld. Starboard Value was founded in 2011 by its three when it spun-off from Ramius Capital Group. While at Ramius, Smith, Mitchell, and Feld managed the Ramius Small Cap Value and Opportunity investment platform. RiverNorth Capital employs a Multi-Strategy approach that is led by its Chief Investment Officer Patrick Galley.

Ranking Methodology: The Top 50 Small-Cap Hedge Fund rankings are compiled on a quarterly basis using hedge fund firms’ overall U.S. equity assets under management. The Small-Cap list includes the top hedge funds that have more than 50% of their U.S. equity assets invested in U.S. listed small-cap companies, which have market capitalizations that are less than $2 billion.
