Amaranth Advisors* was a hedge fund manager that was spun-off of Paloma Partners in September of 2000. Nicholas M. Maounis, who now runs Verition Fund Management, was the managing member of the firm.
In September 2006, Amaranth collapsed after losing $4.6 billion in a single week ($6.6 over the course of the month) from a huge natural gas futures bet. The fund once managed over $9.5 billion and was the largest hedge fund collapse in history at the time.
Amaranth served financial institutions, pension plans, endowments, foundations, and high net worth individuals. The firm had offices in Greenwich, Houston, Toronto, London and Singapore.
