Institutional Investor Background
Tiger Management Corp was founded in 1980 by Julian Robertson as a multi-strategy hedge fund manager. Since 2000, the firm stopped managing money for external investors and now only manages Mr. Robertson's own assets as well as providing seed capital to other hedge fund managers.
Tiger Management originally launched with just $8 million and grew to over $22 billion at its peak in the 1990s, at the time one of the largest in the world. Mr. Robertson, a legend on Wall Street and in the hedge fund industry, liquidated Tiger Management's funds in 1999-2000 after a series of losses in 1998 and 1999.
After Tiger Management closed its external funds, Julian Robertson reinvented the firm through a network of 'Tiger Cubs,' a group of promising analysts and portfolio managers who had worked for Mr. Robertson at Tiger Management. After Tiger's dissolution, these cubs, supported and mentored by Julian Robertson, founded their own funds and many have become very successful fund managers themselves. Mr. Robertson also remains a minority partner in each 'Tiger Seed' firm currently affiliated with Tiger Management.
Julian Robertson is a former officer in the U.S. Navy and spent two decades at Kidder, Peabody & Company, a securities firm that is now a subsidiary of global management giant UBS AG. Mr. Robertson, who began at Kidder as a stockbroker, eventually headed Webster Securities, the firm's asset management subsidiary. After leaving Kidder, Robertson launched Tiger Management in 1980 on the initial investments of friends and family. In the following decades Mr. Robertson rose to great acclaim in the hedge fund industry and was dubbed the 'Wizard of Wall Street' as Tiger Management's successes continued to multiply and investors flocked to invest in the firm's funds. After shutting down the firm in the late 1990s, Mr. Robertson retired from the hedge fund industry, although he is still an active advisor to the Tiger Seeds now run by his former Tiger employees.
Julian Robertson is also involved in philanthropy, having founded the Robertson Scholars Program to benefit Duke University and University of North Carolina students, and is an active developer in New Zealand.
The Tiger Seeds, affiliated with Tiger Management, include Tiger Global, a technology-focused fund manager run by Chase Coleman that was founded in 2001, and Tiger Asia, a firm that focuses on Asian securities headed by Bill Hwang. Other Tiger Seed managers are Tom Faciola and Michael Sears of Tiger Shark Management; Patrick McCormack of Tiger Consumer; Manish Chopra of Tiger Veda; Robert Jafek of Torrey Pines Capital Management; Charles Anderson of Fox Point Capital Management; Eliav Assouline of Axial Capital Management; Pasco Alfaro of Miura Global Management; William Araskog of WRA Investment; Jonathan Auerback of Hound Partners; Christopher Burns of Goshen Investments; Alok Agrawal of Apos Capital Management; Michael Popow of Centurion Global; Rodrigo Andrade of DLH Capital Management; Scott Booth of Eastern Advisors Capital Group; J.
